In case you didn’t know already (in which case where have you been?) Digital PR presents a fantastic opportunity to reach new audiences and spread awareness of your brand. By creating a captivating article, eye-catching infographic, or attention-grabbing story, you can start conversations online and channel people straight to your website. Even better, you can build the domain authority of your site in the process.

There are lots of options when it comes to PR. You can guest post an article, create an online stunt, or outreach relevant publications in hopes that someone will pick up your story and give you exposure. Unfortunately, exposure isn’t always free, and it can be easy to lose faith and think that the only way you will get your business out there is to pay an extortionate price for a mediocre link.

At Peaky Digital, we know this isn’t the case. That’s why we’re here to give you our best tips for Digital PR on a budget.

Make the most of free trials for Digital PR tools

There are loads of free options out there for those who want to dip their toes into the world of Digital PR. However, there are even more paid options. Although free PR tools have their merits, there are obviously going to be downsides when it comes to usability and overall tool management.

Luckily, most of these paid tools have free trials. Use them to your advantage and hunt around for one that works for you. If you find one you really love, it may be worth investing or finding one that is similar at a lower cost.

Top tip: Don’t forget to cancel your free trial before the end date if you have already put in your payment details! Set a reminder on your phone so you don’t end up paying if you’re not interested.

Use Twitter to your advantage for Digital PR on a budget

Twitter is a fantastic tool when it comes to PR on a budget. All you have to do is search the hashtags #JournoRequest, #PRrequest or #BloggerReqest and you will find hundreds of requests for stories and conversations from journalists and more.

Regardless of your niche, there are people out there looking for you to help them. It may take a bit of sifting to find a request directly related to you, but chances are there is already someone out there looking to talk to you about your business.

Top tip: Check Twitter every morning and evening and make sure you don’t miss any requests. Often, they have quick turnaround times.

Make your Digital PR outreach easier with plugins

There’s nothing more annoying than finding the perfect publication for your story or idea, and then realising there are no contact details on the site!

Hunter is a great little tool that addresses this problem and finds email addresses for you. By adding it to Chrome you can simply activate it whilst on the site and it will come up with any registered email addresses ready for you to contact.

Don’t forget, email isn’t the only way to get in touch with publications. Journalists get thousands of emails daily, and it’s always worth giving them a call to separate yourself from the rest!

Top tip: Create a spreadsheet with all the URLs, contact details and whether you have sent an email to make sure you don’t miss any publications or send your requests twice.

Don’t just go for the big fish – start with smaller publications for your PR

We all want to get published in major publications like The Telegraph, The Guardian or The Sun. However, these publications usually only pick up stories that have already been published elsewhere, or they know will gain momentum.

Start with local publications, blogs and news sites that relate to your business and what you’re selling. By starting small you will be able to establish links and build your authority, without wasting time trying to get picked up by major sites. Of course, there is no harm in reaching out to these publications but keep your options open when doing outreach.
